Amazon EC2

Tonight I played a little bit with EC2 from Amazon. The good news is that you can use RS web app with EC2 Micro On-Demand Instances. And those are limited, but cost only $0.02 per hour which is just $15 a month. (comparable with jiffybox in Germany for 0.02€ a hour).
If you create an EC2 instance, you can choose Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS in 32 bit. This way you already have all the required libraries preinstalled for Real Studio Web Apps.

I think this is a great way for Real Studio developers. Such an instance is setup in 5 minutes, you connect with SSH, upload your app and launch it!

Also keep in mind you can purchase a Reserved Instance. You pay $23 up front for a 1-year term and then you only have to pay $0.012/hour, which works out to $8.76/month. (Or I guess it’s $10.68, if you add the $23 / 12 months, but who’s counting.) They have even cheaper Reserved Instance plans, albeit requiring a larger up front payment; with $100 up front you can get a micro instance for as little as $3.65/month.

EC2 is awesome.

Sure, those reserving make it even faster. But my use case as developer is to use a Micro for a quick deployment of a test server for showing a web app. The client will probably later get his own Amazon account with his own VPS, probably not the Micro one as more CPU power may be required with real users on the machine.
